Live Map - An Australian First
LiveMap is an interactive real-time visualisation of our Network.
The application displays our vehicles moving throughout our network in Leeton, Australia.
We are amongst the first few Australian Operators to deploy a real-time Application of our Transportation Network for our customers.
The application itself is relatively straight forward. It uses our GTFS transit data and some new technologies to render a visualisation of our network.
In 2008 we were amongst the first in Australia to adopted and created a General Transit Specification Feed (GTFS) for our services. The GTFS has grown exponentially to become the world standard format for public transport schedules and associated geographic information.
The GTFS was created by TriMet and later adopted and developed by Google to display transit data in the Google Transit Trip Planner
Over the past few years we have been looking at cost effective ways to utilise our own GTFS in a manner useful to our customers.
Fast forward a few years, with the creation of new technologies like node.js our Application started to take shape.
The Application as it stands today implements a simple GTFS parser which emulates the emission of real time event information ( it's actually based on our static GTFS data). The events emitted by the GTFS parser are consumed by the web application, which renders a map and moves markers according to the estimated location of each vehicle.
Much of the technology utilised by the application is open-source and undergoing rapid development.
The application is intended to demonstrate what is possible by mashing cool technology and our GTFS data together, shaking it and letting it boil for a while.
If you are viewing our Application and don't see our vehicles are moving across the network, please keep in mind that we are a small bus operator.
The best time to view the live network map in action is when we operate our services.
